Lodging, Food, Transportation, and Childcare

Macalester College

Our pre-conference intensives and main Gathering will both take place at Macalester College, a private liberal arts college located in St. Paul, Minnesota. This institution was selected for its strong commitment to sustainability, including near-term Zero Waste, Carbon Neutral, and Real Food goals. Our post-conference leadership retreat will be held at the Walker Community United Methodist Church in nearby Minneapolis.

More information about lodging, food, transportation, and childcare can be found below. Minnesota can be hot and humid in late July, so come prepared with an umbrella for shade and rain, as well as a sunhat, sunglasses, and comfortable clothing. Those who plan to spend time outside during the Gathering may also want to bring mosquito repellent. Please note that Macalester is a tobacco-free, drug-free, and alcohol-free campus.

Affordable dorm rooms are available at Macalester College and Concordia University (a 15-minute bus ride or 1.7-mile walk away). Macalester dorms have box fans only (no air-conditioning). Concordia rooms have air-conditioning, but are further away. Dorm housing is available on a first-come, first-serve basis and must be confirmed no later than Monday, July 10th, so please click on the button below to reserve your room now.

In addition to dorm housing at Macalester, the Days Inn St. Paul-Minneapolis-Midway, Best Western Plus Capitol Ridge, and Best Western Plus Como Park Hotel are offering Macalester College discounts on rooms. Be sure to ask for this discount when calling or booking online. The Minneapolis International Hostel offers dorm sleeping, as well as 20 private queen bedrooms, for $39.95 per person. The Twin Cities have an active Couchsurfing community, as well as many Airbnb locations.

Participants can purchase a meal plan for the Macalester College cafeteria, which offers many local and sustainability-sourced, vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free buffet options. Meal plans must be purchased no later than Monday, July 10th and only those who have pre-ordered will be able to enter the cafeteria. In the spirit of Transition, we are encouraging those who are traveling to the National Gathering from out-of-town to use low-carbon transportation methods whenever possible. Traveling by airplane or in a car alone often causes the most carbon dioxide emissions. Long-distance buses and trains, or carpooling in a high-efficiency car, emit the least. To get a sense of the potential impacts of the different choices you are considering, check out this carbon footprint calculator and think about what you can do to help offset your contribution to climate change.

Once you are in the Twin Cities, please take advantage of Metro Transit, the area's high-quality public transportation system. More information about getting to Macalester College and navigating your way around campus can be found by simply clicking on the button below.
